As a result, obsidian is glassy in appearance and has little or no crystalline structure as opposed to crystals that have grown in the ground for many years.

The vast assortment of minerals and impurities in the magma is responsible for the many different colors of obsidian. Iron and Magnesium are primarily responsible for making obsidian black.

Obsidian is hard and brittle and can shatter into many sharp pieces. When obsidian is cut and shaped a specific way, it can have a razor sharp edge.
